Where this comes from

From inside a life the pattern is invisible. Each commitment is reasonable, each week resembles the last, and the allocation taking the life is felt only as busy.

The vantage is not new. In The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith built his account of self-governance on an impartial spectator: a position a person constructs inside themselves, part of the life and far enough from it to judge its pattern. It answers to no external judge.

The Life Read is that spectator, rebuilt as working infrastructure. The questionnaire is scaffolding; the product is the temporary observing position, enough distance to see the pattern before the next consequential choice.

The purpose of the instrument is not to measure the life. It is to give the steward a place from which to see it.

Stewardship requires a third position: close enough to belong to the life, far enough to see its pattern.

Observation is part of the intervention. That is why the Life Read is tested as an intervention, not treated as a survey.

You cannot steward a life while standing entirely inside its momentum.

Who the instrument reports to

The credit file was built for the lender. The actuarial table was built for the insurer. Systems that make a person legible at scale have usually been commissioned by someone other than the person being read. This one runs the other way.

The observer has no commercial stake in your answer. It does carry a training, which is the first of the open problems below. It holds all 9 capitals in view at once, and it renders no verdict. The evidence belongs to the person, and so does the interpretation.

What we have not solved

Every reader carries a school and a training, human or machine. Triangulated readings are one route out; a coach beside the machine is another. Neither is settled.

Whose language

The instrument should speak the register its owner chooses: clinical, contemplative, or their own. Today it speaks ours.

The evidence

A dozen people have taken an early version since March 2026, some thirty readings between them, and those who wrote back told us it changed what they saw. That is testimony from a self-selected group. It is not evidence. Next is a pre-registered pilot: active comparator, blind-coded outcomes, test–retest. It should show where the Read works and where it stops.

The endgame

A world where “have you done your Read?” sounds the way “have you done your bloodwork?” does: a routine instrument of self-governance, not a product.

Personal capital accounts for a whole life, held by the person who lives it. The instrument is live. The pilot buys the evidence.
